Ferguson Fellow (2010-12):
Adrian Billeter, MD

Adrian Billeter, MDDr. Adrian Billeter joined the Price Institute as a Ferguson Fellow in 2010. His research fellowship is in the Surgical Infection Research Laboratory.

A graduate of the University of Zurich Medical School, Switzerland, Billeter learned about the fellowship during his surgical residency at the University of Zurich Hospital. His mentor, Matthias Turina, MD, PhD, himself a Ferguson Fellow from 2004-2006, recommended that he apply for the fellowship.

“I was attracted to Price because of its reputation for excellence in surgical research,?says Billeter. “I knew I would receive expert guidance from mentors who really care about you and your career. It also gave me the opportunity to earn my PhD.?/p>

Billeter is participating in the laboratory’s ongoing research to determine what factors predispose certain patients to developing wound infections and/or sepsis and what the effects of different variables—i.e., temperature change, glucose levels, and oxygen concentrations—have on the immune response. Billeter’s research is focused primarily on how temperature change, specifically hypothermia, affects the response of immune cells, especially monocytes.

“If we can better understand the optimal conditions necessary for appropriate immune response, we may be able to prevent wound infections and sepsis in patients undergoing surgery,?he explains.

Billeter looks forward to a career in academic surgery in Switzerland or the United States, while remaining actively involved in research.

The Ferguson Fellowship is jointly sponsored by the James and Emmeline Ferguson Endowment and the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. Drs. James and Emmeline Ferguson, a surgeon/anesthesiologist, are alumni of the University of Louisville. The fellowship is the best-funded research fellowship offered by Royal College.
